- Thorn:
- The Rose Thorn, the student newspaper where this strip was published.
- Unity:
- Rose’s gay/straight alliance. I was a member, and at the time of this strip the club was struggling for recognition by the SGA. It was eventually turned down, thanks to ridiculous objections like the claim that tolerance of homosexuality made it a religious organization, or the claim that it was a club that did not welcome everybody because homophobes would feel uncomfortable attending meetings.
- IVCF:
- Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. Some of the biggest pro- and anti-Unity advocates were members of this nondenominational organization, if I recall.
- WMHD:
- The campus radio station. I eventually ended up joining the station in my sophomore year, when I and my roommates in room BSB004 began hosting The 004 Show.

Oh, the memories. I wonder if Unity ever became a club…
It seems so; Holden’s their advisor. Cool dude.

There is a difference between being an SGA club and being a recognized campus organization. Unity was always recognized by the administration and had an advisor; the question is SGA recognition and funding from the students’ activity fees.
Not really sure they need that kind of funding though. I know I wrote like 2 checks at most for the year I was treasurer.
The interesting thing about the SGA-Unity kerfuffle was always that they were willing to fund whatever budget we requested (no budget request was ever denied), but were not willing to recognize us as an official SGA club. We received over a grand in funding while I was president, but recognition as a student government club was never approved.
Go figure.
Oh, cool. I know who the secretary is, too. She did work on the Thorn during our time.
