			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I&#8217;ve found myself longing to play in a Live-Action Roleplaying Game that focuses on courtly intrigue. What I mean by this is the social sparring, witty repartee, and backroom dealing that happens among aristocrats in the movie <i>Ridicule</i> or among university professors jockeying for tenure. I&#8217;ve experienced some of this when playing <i>Vampire: The Requiem</i> using the <i>Mind&#8217;s Eye Theatre</i> rules, but that game has a major problem for me. Characters can kill each other with strange powers, so someone playing the political game has to also worry that the person they&#8217;re verbally sparring with can decapitate them with a swipe.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m working on the rules, but I want to design in the open so that I can get feedback and suggestions. Here are my base concepts for the game:</p>
<ol>
<li>This will be a LARP in the American Theatrical style. No foam weapons, and the game runs similarly to a tabletop roleplaying game.</li>
<li>Sessions take approximately four hours and can be linked into an ongoing game.</li>
<li>The game can be played with minimal intervention from a Game Master, although an organizer may help with bookkeeping.</li>
<li>The game can be played while standing and moving around, with limited interference from out-of-character mechanics.</li>
<li>Direct combat is not useful. Any victories or defeats will happen through social interaction.</li>
<li>Special in-character skills or abilities may help a character, but they will not take the place of social intrigue.</li>
<li>While a player&#8217;s strategy and charisma will be helpful, a player lacking social skills or cleverness can still have fun and influence things.</li>
</ol>
<p>My idea so far is a combination of concepts from the card game <i>Whist</i>, the TV show <i>Survivor</i>, and the mancala game <i>Oware</i>.<br />

<p>In order to gain access to the temple, you will need to get past the outer gate. Speak to the outer gatekeeper and tell him you are a FRIEND. He will let you through.</p>
<p>Speak to the Recruitment Officer in the western tower and ask him about himself (&#8220;ABOUT YOU&#8221;). He will mention that he doesn&#8217;t want to be greedy about getting a better position. Sounds like a way in, but we&#8217;re not yet corrupted by Greed.</p>
<p>Speak to the inner gatekeeper. He doesn&#8217;t want to let you in, but it sounds like he&#8217;s a bit overworked. Corrupt him with the sin of Sloth. He&#8217;ll sit down to rest and let you in.</p>
<p>Speak to the Lieutenant on the west side of the keep. He&#8217;ll say he&#8217;s happy, but keep asking him &#8220;REALLY?&#8221; until he confesses that he wants the commander&#8217;s position. You&#8217;re now corrupted with the sin of Greed. Go back to the Recruitment Officer and corrupt him with Greed. He&#8217;ll admit that he&#8217;s always wanted to be a drill sergeant, and ask you to speak with the commander on his behalf.</p>
<p>The commander is in the center of the south wall of the keep. Talk to him about the RECRUITER, and he&#8217;ll ask that you check with the Temple Clerk about the recruiter&#8217;s experience. Go to the Temple Clerk and talk to him. He sure doesn&#8217;t seem to appreciate the effort that the Recruitment Officer puts in! If only you had a sin that made people understand the viewpoints of others.</p>
<p>Corrupt the Temple Clerk with the sin of Envy. He&#8217;ll admit that he&#8217;s envious of the Recruitment Officer&#8217;s experience in his job, and that he deserves a promotion. Inform the Commander, who will ask you to inform the Recruitment Officer. Return to him, and he&#8217;ll enlist you as his final act in his old job.</p></blockquote>

<p>3D is an interesting tool to work with.  <a href="http://ludusnovus.net/2010/05/22/2d-vs-3d-diagram-vs-architecture/>I&#8217;ve written about this before</a>, but moving <em>through</em> a scene gives a very different feel than hovering above a scene in 3D.  Thus this game, naturally, is about progressing through and exploring a space.  It&#8217;s short, but I&#8217;m pretty proud of it.  I&#8217;ll also say that <a href="http://unity3d.com/">Unity</a> is an amazing tool and its free version is totally worth checking out for anyone interested in dipping their toes into 3D. EDIT: This game was made entirely with the free version, along with free tools like Blender, GIMP, and Audacity.</p>

<p>For those who are interested in <a href="http://ludusnovus.net/2010/05/13/fixing-silent-conversation/">mixing linear prose and poetry with gaming</a>, there&#8217;s a project that looks very interesting: &#8220;<a href="http://www.moontaxi.org/">Moon Taxi</a>,&#8221; brought to my attention by <a href="http://www.gamesetwatch.com/2010/05/moon_taxi_flies_you_to_the_moo.php">GameSetWatch</a>.  &#8220;Moon Taxi&#8221; is a game for Xbox Live Indie Games (not PC, sadly) where you play a taxi driver to the moon.  Your passengers tell stories, some submitted by fans, and important words in those stories appear in front of you as you hear them.  It looks very cool; a creative writing prompt and a clever way to approach storytelling all at once. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I like the concept behind my game &#8220;<a href="http://ludusnovus.net/my-games/silent-conversation/">Silent Conversation</a>.&#8221;  The words of a piece form the physical structure of a level that is shaped by the setting, events, and feelings of the work&#8217;s content.  Unfortunately, &#8220;Silent Conversation&#8221; is, well, not a very good <em>game</em>.  It&#8217;s slow, because I wanted to encourage people to read the pieces.  But it&#8217;s way too slow to be fun.  The idea of certain words being &#8220;powerful&#8221; is promising, but the dodge-dark-red-things gameplay is more annoying than engaging.</p>
<p>A lot of people really resonated with the idea.  I heard plenty of compliments for the visual interpretation of the text, and for making the text interesting to read, and for the potential of the game for education&#8230; but no one really said the game was fun.  So here&#8217;s a question for you: how can I make a spiritual successor to &#8220;Silent Conversation&#8221; that&#8217;s actually fun?  I&#8217;m seeking your help here.<br />

This past weekend I took part in <a href="http://www.ludumdare.com/">Ludum Dare</a> 17.  Ludum Dare is a periodic informal competition where participants make a game in 48 hours based on a certain theme.  This time, the theme was &#8220;Islands.&#8221;  By the end of the weekend, I created a game called &#8220;Waves,&#8221; which can be <a href="http://ludusnovus.net/my-games/waves/">played on my site</a>.  <a href="http://www.refrag.com/">Kayla Kinnunen</a> posted a <a href="http://www.refrag.com/2010/04/26/roller-derby-20xx-postmortem/">postmortem of her own experience</a>, and I thought it would be fun to do one of my own.</p>

<p>When we last left our game, the citizens of Meersha had fled a dragon, Zekleinenezzar, who had taken over their town. They took refuge in an abandoned fortress overlooking the abandoned city of Decolay, which has been taken over by kenku, goblins, and possibly other forces.  They returned from a trip to the dream world to find kobold worshipers of the dragon making advances on the fortress.</p>
<p>The party consists of:<br />
Etzlojek, kobold rogue and lover of fine things, adopted by the town’s general store owner; he is branded Etzlojek the Traitor by the attacking kobolds<br />
Eva, student of the local ritual mage and magic shop owner, who seems like a perfectly normal human wizard with a penchant for shapechanging spells<br />
Donaar, dragonborn warlock and enemy of dragons, who ended up in town after his home city was overrun by undead<br />
Diesa, stalwart dwarven fighter grossed out by bugs, who was visiting family in town and seems to have vampire heritage<br />
Sully, formerly-retired half-elf paladin of Erathis and party NPC, who ran the tavern in Meersha.</p>
<p>This is level five.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This is a summary of my ongoing Dungeons &#038; Dragons Fourth Edition game, played with some friends from college over the internet using MapTool and Teamspeak.</p>
<p>When we last left our game, the citizens of Meersha had fled a dragon who had taken over their town. They arrived at their theoretical refuge to find the city of Decolay in ruins, and camped in an abandoned fortress overlooking the town. The fortress seemed to be able to transport people into long-lost dreams in their sleep, where the party was guided by a tiefling scholar named Sampa.  The next morning, the party made an alliance with a kenku tribe, the Ravencrows, living near the southern edge of the city, and explored an old botanical laboratory.</p>
<p>The party consists of:<br />
Etzlojek, kobold rogue and lover of fine things, adopted by the town’s general store owner<br />
Eva, student of the local ritual mage and magic shop owner, who seems like a perfectly normal human wizard<br />
Donaar, dragonborn warlock and enemy of dragons, who ended up in town after his home city was overrun by undead<br />
Diesa, stalwart dwarven fighter grossed out by bugs, who was visiting family in town and seems to be developing vampiric tendencies<br />
Sully, formerly-retired half-elf paladin of Erathis and party NPC, who ran the tavern in Meersha.</p>
<p>This is level three.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This is a summary of my ongoing <i>Dungeons &#038; Dragons</i> Fourth Edition game, played with some friends from college over the internet using <a href="http://rptools.net/">MapTool</a> and <a href="http://www.teamspeak.com/">Teamspeak</a>.</p>
<p>When we last left our game, the citizens of Meersha had fled a dragon who had taken over their town.  They arrived at their theoretical refuge to find the city of Decolay in ruins, and took refuge in an empty, abandoned fortress overlooking the town.  The purpose of some of the strange structures there was revealed when the party found themselves sharing a dream, where they encountered the private demons of a long-dead eladrin noblewoman and saw echoes of a tiefling scholar named Sampa.</p>
<p>The dream was experienced by five people:<br />
Etzlojek, kobold rogue and lover of fine things, adopted by the town&#8217;s general store owner<br />
Eva, student of the local ritual mage and magic shop owner, who seems like a perfectly normal human wizard<br />
Donaar, dragonborn warlock, who ended up in town after his home city was overrun by undead<br />
Diesa, stalwart dwarven fighter grossed out by bugs, who was visiting family in town<br />
Sully, formerly-retired half-elf paladin of Erathis and party NPC, who ran the tavern in Meersha.</p>

<p><strong>To play the .zblorb file, you will need a Z-machine interpreter</strong>, which is like a media player for interactive fiction. If you use Windows, I recommend <a href="http://ccxvii.net/gargoyle/">Gargoyle</a>.  If you use Mac OS X, I recommend <a href="http://www.logicalshift.co.uk/mac/Zoom-Latest.dmg">Zoom</a>.  If you use Linux, I recommend the <a href="http://www.logicalshift.demon.co.uk/unix/zoom/">Linux version of Zoom</a>.</p>
<p>This game is heavily inspired by <a href="http://ifdb.tads.org/viewgame?id=xwedbibfksczn7eq">Gun Mute</a>.  It is a (potentially) violent piece of interactive fiction with multiple endings set in a science fiction world of robots, plasma swords, and intergalactic finance.  I&#8217;ve attempted to create something that rarely occurs in interactive fiction: a game that requires tactical thought as a challenge rather than puzzle-solving.  In-game instructions and hints are available by typing HELP in-game.  &#8220;Backup&#8221; is written in Inform 7.  Let me know what you think in the comments!</p>

<p>Well, that didn&#8217;t take long. My August game, <i>The Mold Fairy</i>, is released.  It&#8217;s a game about mold, magic, and death.</p>

When the fairy queen Titania decided that humans had lost their respect for mold, the mold fairy was sent down to teach them the power of the fuzzy fungi. Did the fairy brighten the humans&#8217; lives, or curse them with poisons and spoiled food? Only you can decide.</p></blockquote>

<p>This is a game in the vein of &#8220;Majesty of Colors&#8221; and <i>How to Raise a Dragon</i>; there are choices, and they affect outcomes.  In this case, the choices are what to mold, and the outcomes run the gambit.  This is my most explicit use of the &#8220;achievement&#8221; concept so far; I think it works for this sort of game.</p>

<p>Astute readers will notice that there appears to be a monthly game missing.  My August game, <i>The Mold Fairy</i>, is finally complete and should come out very soon.  Hey, I&#8217;m willing to bend the rules of my New Year&#8217;s resolution if you are.</p>
<p>&#8220;Paladin 0&#8243; is, in part, an experiment using the <a href="http://flixel.org">Flixel</a> framework, which is a library designed to help with making pixelly games in Flash.  It is very slick, as you can see from the amount I was able to achieve in just three days of work.  If all goes according to plan, my October game will be a procedurally-generated Metroidvania done with Flixel.</p>

<p>This game grew out of an idea that I had in childhood.  I was a voracious reader, and occasionally, late at night, I would see the structure of the words on the page as something physical: the end of a paragraph was a fissure in a cliff edge, and each indentation was a handhold.  I could visualize a little person running along the lines, exploring every crevice of the story.  This is an attempt to realize that concept.</p>

I&#8217;ll cut the comment for length, but try to retain the intent.</p>
<blockquote><p>I’m a visual artist, so critiquing your visuals is all I feel arrogant enough to do.  They were well executed and suited their purpose in &#8220;Bars of Black and White&#8221; and in <i>Exploit</i> (and in the &#8220;Majesty of Colors&#8221; they were exquisite), but in &#8220;Sugarcore&#8221; and &#8220;How to Raise a Dragon&#8221; they cause the games to suffer.  In &#8220;How to Raise a Dragon&#8221;, the pixels are not a bad idea, but they are also sort of sloppy looking. They are used in lieu of more detailed graphics to avoid having to draw, right? They are probably better than the alternative, but the use of pixels should not become your crutch. Instead it should be used to artistic effect.</p></blockquote>

Others may see you plummet and die, but you might live on, soaring above the clouds. Anyone can dream, but it takes someone special to make those dreams real.</i></p></blockquote>
<p>Here is the release of my May game: <i>LORE</i>, the Lightweight Omnipotent Roleplaying Engine, and its first sourcebook, <i>Belief</i>.  Together, they form my first tabletop roleplaying game system.</p>
<p><i>LORE</i> is an attempt to address <a href="http://ludusnovus.net/2009/05/22/whats-wrong-with-tabletop-rpgs/">some of the common problems with tabletop RPGs</a>.  It has <a href="http://ludusnovus.net/2008/11/07/fumbling-critical-rolls-and-the-lore-approach/">an interesting dice system</a>; a quick, easy, and original character creation system; and a system that&#8217;s lightweight, because <a href="http://ludusnovus.net/2008/10/29/the-space-beyond-the-rules/">roleplaying happens beyond the rules</a>.</p>
<p><i>Belief</i> is a game about changing reality, about subjective viewpoints, and about the search for a better world.  It owes heavy debts to other sources, but it is its own being.</p>

<p>Both of these books are beta releases.  They have been playtested, but not enough for me to say they&#8217;re finished.  Please, read them, play them, and comment with anything you think I did especially right or that I could change for the better.  I&#8217;ve provided them in bookmarked PDFs slavishly laid out for optimal printing at your local print shop, and they&#8217;re released under a <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/us/">Creative Commons by-nc-sa 3.0 License.</a></p>
<p>These are just the initial releases; I wanted to get them out and in people&#8217;s minds so that I could start getting feedback.  Expect extras like quick reference sheets and maybe an adventure or three in the coming weeks and months.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I learned an important lesson a week or so ago: don&#8217;t release games on April Fool&#8217;s Day.  I thought that April 1st would be a fun day to release <i>The Bryant Collection</i>, with its hard-to-believe premise and odd approach.  The result?  I think a lot of folks saw the post, said &#8220;ha, ha!&#8221; and assumed the whole thing was a joke.  The biggest reaction I got was <a href="http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.int-fiction/msg/81d231b91f65b057">a flame</a> from someone who&#8217;d evidently had one too many websites change up their CSS stylesheets on him.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a shame, because despite the premise and backstory, <i><a href="http://ludusnovus.net/my-games/the-bryant-collection/">The Bryant Collection</a></i> is a real game, and one that I poured a lot of effort and heart into.  But I haven&#8217;t gotten a single review, game entry on an IF site, or even a comment from someone who&#8217;s played the game.  The only e-mail I&#8217;ve gotten about it is from my parents.</p>
<p>In retrospect, I shouldn&#8217;t be surprised.  Mixing truth and fiction is risky enough when it&#8217;s not on a day dedicated to lies, and the games from the <a href="http://www.springthing.net/2009/">Spring Thing</a> were released at almost the exact same time.  The Spring Thing is probably the second or third biggest IF event of the year, so naturally <i>Bryant</i> would be overshadowed by those games, especially if it&#8217;s dismissed as a joke.</p>
<p>This post isn&#8217;t a cry for attention or anything.  I just wanted to share my reactions when a game doesn&#8217;t get very well-received, since I always post when a game gets positive reactions.</p>

<p>Right on the heels of my last release, here&#8217;s my April game, <i>The Bryant Collection</i>.  This one is a bit of a cop-out; it&#8217;s not actually <em>my</em> game.  Instead, it&#8217;s a translation of someone else&#8217;s work into interactive fiction.</p>
<p>An excerpt from my <a href="http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.int-fiction/browse_thread/thread/71691fd9a498faca">release post on RGIF</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>A few months ago, I found an old strongbox at a garage sale.  The box was full of papers written by a woman named Laura Bryant.  The majority of the stuff in the box was a collection of what she called &#8220;story worlds.&#8221;</p>
<p>These story worlds are akin to interactive fiction or roleplaying games; they&#8217;re designed for one player and one mediator who serves as the parser or the game master.  The earliest date on a story world in the box is 1964, which means these works predate Crowther and Woods&#8217;s <i>Adventure</i>, <i>Dungeons &#038; Dragons</i>, or Wesely&#8217;s <i>Braunstein</i>.  The Bryant Collection contains the five stories that I found the most interesting and feasible to convert to IF:</p>
<ul>
<li>&#8220;The End of the World&#8221; is a story about lunch.</li>
<li>&#8220;Morning in the Garden&#8221; is a story about dealing with annoying people.</li>
<li>&#8220;Tower of Hanoi&#8221; is a rather interesting little puzzle, but not what you think.  It came with a sort of feelie in the strongbox, which is included as an IF object.</li>
<li>&#8220;Going Home Again&#8221; is a story about growing up.</li>
<li>&#8220;Undelivered Love Letter&#8221; is a story about airports.</li>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://jayisgames.com/">Casual Gameplay/Jay Is Games</a> has released their <a href="http://jayisgames.com/best-of/2008/">Best of Casual Gameplay 2008 awards</a>, and my game &#8220;<a href="http://ludusnovus.net/my-games/the-majesty-of-colors/">(I Fell In Love With) The Majesty of Colors</a>&#8221; won the Audience Award for the <a href="http://jayisgames.com/best-of/2008/interactive-art-or-webtoy-results/">Best Interactive Art or Webtoy (Browser)</a> category!  I got 15.9% of the popular vote, beating out such awesome games as &#8220;<a href="http://www.ludomancy.com/games/MoonWish.html">I Wish I Were the Moon</a>&#8221; and <i><a href="http://www.komix-games.com/game.php?game=Coil">Coil</a></i>.  Those two games shared the editors&#8217; award for the same category, which was entirely deserved.</p>

<p>Back at the beginning of the month, I <a href="http://ludusnovus.net/2009/01/04/new-years-resolution-2009/">resolved</a> that I would release at least one game each month.  January&#8217;s is &#8220;Bars of Black and White,&#8221; a game about barcodes and Orwellian experimentation.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve decided to try my hand at Flash game development.  It&#8217;s always been a dream of mine to make a living at creating games, and Flash games seem to be a viable way for individual, independent developers to earn a living.</p>
<p>My first game has just been released, thanks in part to a sponsorship from <a href="http://minijuegos.com">MiniJuegos.com</a>.  It&#8217;s a truly global market when a Spanish-language games site headquartered in Spain can fund an English-language game from one guy in North Carolina.</p>
<p><i>Necropolis</i> is a game about Ms. Lilian Trevithick, lady adventurer and radical steam technician, who has come to the infamous Necropolis of Ao in search of adventure.  She descends through 25 procedurally-generated levels of traps and treasure to achieve her goal.</p>
<p>Please give me any comments, compliments, or criticisms that come to mind playing the game!  This is the first game I&#8217;ve released in years, so I&#8217;m both very nervous and very excited.</p>
