Is the illusion of player agency as good as real player agency? Isn’t a video game just a simulated game master? Is the Chinese Room a good game? If the author is dead, what about the algorithm?

I feel that although the experience of interactivity is enhanced, despite the fact that the author is dead, the fact remains that ELIZA is only barely interactive, which is proven by the fact that ELIZA is near dead too. If Eliza was as interactive as people’s initially expected from the first experience, there would be people willing to chatter with ELIZA frequently.
It would be worth it too. You could get the AI’s perspective on things. You would have a never-bored, all-remembering, never-sleeping conversation partner.
In this case I subscribe to Gregory House’s thought: “If the magic goes away once the mystery is revealed, there was never any magic to begin with”.
On the other hand… His thoughts are sure to lead to miserableness. I might better subsribe to Nolan’s “Everybody fools themselves.”
